The media could not be loaded.Ok, first off: if you’re trying to deter some raccoons in your suburban neighborhood, you should know that as tough and persistent as they may seem to you… those are still just city coons. All you really have to do, is make it difficult enough for them that they walk a hundred yards down the street and get into someone else’s stuff.I’m trying protect a corn feeder for the deer. The coons climb it, and empty it. There’s no house on the property. The nearest neighbor is over a mile away. But they’re not near water or trees, so the raccoons probably don’t find his place so easily. The point is, my corn feeder is the only easy food in these coon’s home range. They are determined, and they will go through a lot to get to the corn.My first attempt was 3 rows of spiky material around the pole. To my surprise, the raccoon easily climbed over it. It just doesn’t stick out far enough. It doesn’t take much to deter an opossum, but a raccoon with climb over a lot.So I moved a piece to the pipe, hoping to deprive it of the place it sits, and added this product. It significantly slowed them down, but they figured out how to get past it. The first time I saw them climb it, it took nearly 3 minutes. With some practice, they could get past it 30 seconds or so.So I added more spikes, and I think I finally got them blocked. How far you have to go in order to stop them will depend on their motivation. If you’re dealing with desperate country coons, expect them to be very persistent. It is helpful if you can get video of how they defeat it, so you know what to adjust.update (10/5/24): The coons have learned to defeat it again. Just this evening there were two groups that came through. At one point there were 3 coons up on the feeder (one on the pipe, 3 back on the area with spikes). Country racoons are very determined.
